Best College Application Essay Prompts
Best College Application Essay Prompts Iâve seen some news articles in which each paragraph is only one sentence long. I feel thatâs taking it to extremes, and it can have the opposite effect of making your writing look disjointed. I like to see at least three or four lines to a paragraph, and as an indication, my longest paragraph so far is just 74 words long. Whatever youâre discussing, youâll discover a number of concepts which you presumably planned before you started writing. To make it all hang together nicely, you add a bit of space when you transition from one area of discussion to another. As with any rule, there are exceptions, but broadly speaking, essay writing and academic writing calls for paragraphs in the word range. It depends on how large or small your letters are. I average 240 handwritten words per college ruled sheet. This would depend heavily on how big/small you write. itâs like different fonts take up different amount of space on a page, so does your specific handwriting. If youâre a writer, shouldnât writing well be the most important thing? Why do writers seem to obsess over word count and page count? Editing is vastly different from original writing so this needs to be clarified first, as it has to be the voice and personal memories of the applicant not the parent. The sooner the family treats this as a team effort it will be much easier for the 12th grader to feel as though they are not alone in this process. CollegeXpress has everything you need to simplify your college search, get connected to schools, and find your perfect fit. âSwings are everywhere,â she says, so it was a relatable topic while still being unique to her own personality. You can assume commercial writing and news reports will have paragraphs approximately half as long as the ones youâd see in academic or essay writing. In this case, weâre looking at ten to twenty paragraphs per 1,000 words instead of five to ten. âWhite spaceâ is a wonderful illusion that tells your reader what you have to say is pretty easy to take in. Additionally, using swings as her favorite place gave her a lot of imagery to work with in her essay, because she could describe what being on the swings felt like. The important lesson to take away here is that if you are truthful and genuine in your essay, it will be easy to write about. Rachel, a student at James Madison University, recalls her Common Application essay with pride, because she was true to herself in everything she wrote. Make sure that your essay is more than a recitation of the accomplishments, activities, and experiences already hashed out in the application. If your essay doesnât present any new information, it will be dull and forgettable. I have a writing assignment in school, and it is always helpful to know how many pages I will need. I think that since teachers donât give page assignments but only word count assignments, itâs difficult to imagine how many pages that will be. Why is everything word count these days instead of page count? When I was in school when I was younger, all assignments were page count. Can someone explain to me why so many people are obsessed with word count and page count? There are instances when youâre given an assignment, not by word count, but assigned by the number of pages. For example, âWrite a paper four pages long.â If you get an assignment to write four pages, one of the first questions that will likely come to mind is, âHow many words are in four pages? â If you need to figure out words per page, you can use a words per page calculator. Editing for grammatical errors and spelling mistakes is fine, but donât change the voice of the essay. If an essay is too âpolishedâ it may seem inauthentic, creating confusion in the reader. If you really want to make an impression, let your personality shine through. The essay is supposed to reveal information that you havenât had a chance to discuss elsewhere in the application. Itâs meant to be a deeper dive into who you are beyond the numbers and accolades. As we mentioned earlier, you donât know who is reading your essay or how they feel about these subjects. Itâs best not to offend them or make them feel uncomfortable. Make sure that you are confident in your essay and accept feedback, but donât allow others to change your essay in any way that will cause it to lose its original message. Parents should always help their child in a positive way as long as they are not writing the ideas for the student. The best way to know your per page word count would be to look at past pages and count the number of words you write for each page. itâs time consuming, but any other estimate is bound not to be accurate since itâs so dependent on your handwriting.
College Admissions Essay
College Admissions Essay Topics like death and divorce are cautionary because they can be extremely difficult to write about. While these topics are tough, if you feel passionately that a particular tragedy impacted your life significantly and you do want to write about it, try to keep the essayâs focus on you. Each body paragraph will have the same basic structure. Begin by writing one of your main ideas as the introductory sentence. No matter which side of the argument you choose, you should acknowledge the other angle and negate those statements. As you will see below, we remark on why some students may not want cell phone usage policies. We will also suggest how to get around those concerns. Doing this provides the best possible support for your thesis because it shows you have taken every angle into consideration. If our thesis was that cell phones should NOT be controlled in college, we would explain the dangers of not having access to cell phones. Think about your feelings regarding the situation, how it affected you and what you learned from the experience rather than just simply recalling the situation or the person you lost. The body of your essay argues, explains or describes your topic. Each main idea that you wrote in your diagram or outline will become a separate section within the body of your essay. With a 1,000-word scholarship essay, you will need to cite sources and provide detailed references to support your claims. 1,000+ word essay prompts are often used for writing competitions, where you may be asked to create a fictional story. The extra length gives room for extra creativity, but it also requires more time to put the perfect piece together. 500-word scholarship essays offer more writing flexibility than 250-word essays. With a shorter word count, you are often forced to summarize long-winded thoughts into quick to-the-point snippets. If you are writing a story or personal anecdote, the formatting can be more like a novel than a news article. Yes, every college essay is read if the college has asked for it . The number of readers depends on the collegeâs review process. It will be anywhere from one reader to four readers. 500 words give you more room to express your opinion. Yet, it is still short enough that it does not need footnotes and cited resources, usually. 500-word essays do not have to be exactly 500 words, but they should be as close as possible. We explain that colleges need to adapt their rules to fit the needs of their students. Yet still, confirm that cell phone use policies should be enforced. Next, write each of your supporting ideas in sentence format, but leave three or four lines in between each point to come back and give detailed examples to back up your position. Fill in these spaces with relative information that will help link smaller ideas together.5. You should approach all essays with the same mentality, regardless of their length. Your goal is to compose a piece that clearly guides the reader through your thoughts and reasoning. You may have to adjust how you convey those thoughts based on the length. Your essay should always have a beginning, middle, and end. Another scholarship essay length you may encounter is 1,000 words. The essay prompt may say âin under 500 wordsâ or âin at least 500 words,â which would state whether 500 is the minimum or maximum word count. If that information is not specified, write as much as you need to comprehensively address the prompt without frivolous content. The format of a 500-word scholarship essay is similar to a shorter essay. Each paragraph is about words, and it consists of 3-5 well-written sentences.

Successful College Essay Examples From Top
Successful College Essay Examples From Top I adore the end of a cross country race when all the girls from different schools hug and laugh with one another. I cherish being on a soccer team, where the bond between my teammates and me is essential for achieving success. Appreciating uniqueness and connecting to different characters augments my own maturity and depth. Nothing could get in between the love we had for each other, even our vehemently opposing opinions. Patience, collaboration, and determination are all needed when climbing a wall, like in any field of research. I no longer say I canât do something, instead approaching challenges with the utmost confidence. I extract small pieces of their perspectives in order to enhance my own. If I completely disagree with their opinions, I use their counterargument to articulate a more potent version of my position. The value in telling my story is just as important as hearing another. I love group projects in school, where ideas and creativity flow between people. Despite our differences, Emily and I have a healthy relationship in which we are able to learn from one another; the acknowledgement of our individual value allows us to avoid bitterness. I strive to continue improving my ability to be comfortable with disagreement in order to learn more from my peers. I was utterly offended by her statement, but I replied calmly, âLet people be who they are.â Emily and I grew up in Texas together as inseparable friends. For twelve years that was our beautiful home, and we enjoyed every moment together. Last summer, Emily visited my new home of five years, San Francisco, for the first time. We still laughed until our faces turned tomato red. We still screamed our favorite Taylor Swift songs as if there was no tomorrow. I may not always send up agreeing with Emily, or other people I care about, but I should at least try to understand a different perspective. Only then can I create a bridge that connects two different ideas, allowing for a more harmonious world. Assimilating into American culture and the American way of life was no easy feat for me and I struggled at first, but I found ways to manage. Although my parents were not fluent in English, I was able to learn English with the help of Dora the Explorer, Barney, and my surroundings. Little by little, American culture poured into my life, intermingling with my Guatemalan roots. The more I remain nonjudgmental, the more my own beliefs develop and become nuanced. So, I try to listen with an open mind, even when that feels extremely difficult. Sometimes, pure adrenaline rushes through my body, making me want to bang my hands on the table out of complete anger towards an opinion. I have learned, though, that suppressing my emotional side during a time of disagreement and instead responding with calmness gets my point across more effectively. When that irritation begins to overtake my ability to concentrate on another personâs outlook, I always try to draw from my experiences of living both in the South and in the West. If one plan falls short, I reassess and approach the wall from another angle. I am comfortable making decisions, even when I donât know what the outcome may be. They are surrounded by different cultures and experiences. I donât necessarily have to find validity in everyoneâs viewpoints to at least listen to their reasoning. âThese people are just confused,â Emily whispered to me as she stared out the car window at the gay couples walking down the rainbow streets of the Castro. Through this life-changing sport I have strengthened not only my body but also my mind, learning the beauty of problem solving. The best things about climbing is that there is no clear-cut way to climb a wall, and that there is always a new challenge.
